Foresight’s Gedling Solar Farm in Nottingham generates premium golden nectar

Nottingham, December 2017: Foresight Group’s 6MW Gedling Solar Farm in Nottinghamshire is delighted to be able to offer high quality honey from hives situated on the farm, managed and collected by The Friends of Gedling Country Park (‘the Friends’).

With a grant provided by Foresight, six beehives were purchased and occupied with locally collected swarms. The hives are securely located within the solar farm boundaries, at no inconvenience to visitors, and maintained by the Friends. The locally produced honey is to be sold each year to raise proceeds. As well as providing the Friends with a sustainable source of income, the honey is rumoured to be advantageous to Hay Fever sufferers. The presence of bees within the park will increase the diversity of the habitat and assist in pollinating the local flora.

Gedling Solar Farm, owned and operated by Foresight Group, the independent infrastructure and private equity investment manager, has 23,000 solar modules across the 14-hectare site. It is estimated that the farm generates enough clean electricity to power 1,000 local homes every year. The site is the former Gedling Colliery which has been unused since its closure in 1991.

Terry Lock, Chairman of registered charity, Friends of Gedling Country Park, said: “At the park we welcome visitors of all ages all year round and we are delighted that the bees in the park seem to be thriving. This year they have produced a surplus of honey that we make available for visitors to sample and buy in our shop on the site.”

Foresight manages solar funds for institutional and retail investors, and has amassed a portfolio of more than 100 solar farms around the world, generating enough clean energy to provide power to the equivalent of 290,000 UK homes. Investors can find the predictable and inflation-linked returns attractive particularly in the context of low bond yields and low interest rates.

Ben Thompson Group Marketing Director at Foresight said:It’s a pleasure to offer this limited-edition honey from the industrious bees at our Gedling Solar Farm. We work closely with Friends of Gedling Country Park to ensure visitors to the area not only learn about and enjoy the clean energy being generated but also the wonderful biodiversity of flora and fauna. We are grateful to the charity for looking after the bees and for collecting their honey which is delicious with a light and refreshing taste and texture.”

Foresight is seeing significant growth opportunities in renewable energy infrastructure, and is broadening its footprint beyond purely generation assets (solar, wind and bioenergy) into renewables enabling technologies, having recently acquired two utility scale battery storage assets, on top of expanding its portfolio of flexible generation assets in the UK.

About The Friends of Gedling Country Park

The Friends of Gedling Country Park was formed in late 2014 to help develop and maintain the new country park, aiming to enhance its habitats, flora and fauna and to serve as an active means of communication and co-operation between all users. The charity works closely with the Gedling Borough Council which operates and manages the park, and aims to ensure that volunteers are actively involved in all aspects of the park's use. The latest statistics estimated the park received over 30,000 visitors a year, although this figure is increasing.
